ACHIEVEMENTS:  First African-American basketball player at a Southern white college, inducted into the W.N.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 1981, and the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

SERIOUS STATS:  Western Carolina's all-time leading scorer with 30.7 points per game, leading the nation in scoring in 1967-68.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:  NAIA All-American selection in 1965, 1966, 1967, and 1968 and Associated Press College Division All-America selection in 1967 and 1968.

Opened the door for student-athletes of his race as he was the first African-American to be recruited and participated in intercollegiate athletics in 1964 at a predominantly white institution in the Southeast.

Led the nation in scoring for the 1967-68 season, when he averaged 36.2 points a game.

Scored 59 or more points in six games, including WCU record 60, and scored 40 or more points in 20 games.  There have been only nine other 40-points-plus performance in WCU history.  Also, had a school-record 22 assists in 1968.

1967 Pan-Am Gold Medal Winner.

Played in the ABA with the Oakland Oaks, Washington Capitals, and Virginia Squires for four seasons.  Helped the Oaks win the ABA title in 1969 and averaged 20 points a game for the Capitals in 1970.

  22. Henry's most outstanding record is that he was the first black athlete to play at Western Carolina and he was the ideal person to break racial barriers that existed for hundreds of years before he came to Cullowhee.
